KlearWater
Water Treatment We like chlorine dioxide purification
treatments for their light weight, lack of taste, and deadly effect
on tough pathogens such as giardia and cryptosporidia, The downsides
include measuring drops, mixing solutions, and fiddling with gadgets.
This version comes as a simple no-mix formula, enough to treat
32 liters, or 8 ½ gallons, a 1-ml measuring spoon, and
a plastic case to prevent leaks. Just measure and add to your
bottle or bladder. In 15 minutes, it'll kill most bacteria and
viruses, while tougher germs and cysts are dispatched in about
half an hour. That's a lot faster than similar tablets. The solution
is virtually tasteless, but can bleach clothes if spilled. Enough
for 32 liters, or 8 ½ gallons. $13; 2.9 oz. www. klearwater.com.

tester Pam Wyant said "Wow! So far I am very impressed
by the convenience of using KlearWater. I found it much easier to use
than a filter, especially when stopping along the trail during the day.
Many of the water sources we encountered were small trickling springs,
and I found I could use my small platypus sport bottle to collect the
water, transfer it to either my 1 L or 2 L bladder, and add the appropriate
amount of KlearWater to treat the water faster and more conveniently
than getting out my gravity fed filter, setting it up, and trying to
collect enough water to fill it from these shallow sources. Even with
the 15 minute treatment time, I could be drinking water faster than
if I used the filter set-up due to the ease of use of KlearWater. In
fact, KlearWater was so convenient, I ended up treating water several
times along the way for my friends who had planned on using a filter,
so we could make our water stops shorter and they could be drinking
water sooner!" MORE

Dirt - Adventure Racing according to Robyn Benincasa
My
name is Robyn Benincasa, and I'm a professional Adventure Racer/Firefighter
who has had a great deal of experience with KlearWater/Xinix. My adventure
racing teams and I have been using the product since 1998, and highly
recommend it for not only water purification, but disinfection of cuts
and scrapes while out in the field, as well as a bit of oral hygiene
during races (sadly we don't do a lot of teeth brushing while racing
hard for 7-10 days in races like the Eco-Challenge!--don't tell mom).
The main benefits to us are the fact that the product is really easy
to use while on the “run” (literally), there is no mixing,
there is little or no taste at all when it's added to water or drink
mixes (versus iodine and many other brands), we have a good deal of
confidence in the spectrum of “cootie coverage”, and it's
a multi-use product in our packs (ref the disinfection of cuts and scrapes),
which is the key to racing as light and fast as possible (and fighting
brush fires).
Basically, KlearWater would definitely be the first thing on my Top
10 Things to Have on a Deserted Island list. Ok, maybe the second
thing. :)

We're big fans, as are the rest of the experienced expedition length
adventure racers in the world. Nobody drinks more bad water than we
do--And the fact that we're relatively bug free over the last 8 years
is a great testament to
KlearWater!
